The Art Cinema, located on 150 S. Sante Fe, is a nice alternative when you want to see a movie that is "not stupid."
"I like a movie theater that offers more than just the usual stupid teen movies and the Art Cinema does just that, offers
more," said movie-goer Stetson Smith.
Smith, like many movie-goers, enjoys having variety of choices of movies to
see, but most theaters, focused on profit, only offer what they think the general public will want to see.
So, if the
movie that they want to attend features the word "limited" in its description, chances are that they will not get to see the
movie until it comes out to rent.
However, with access to an Art Cinema like Salina's, movie fans do not have to wait
as long for some films.
The Salina Art Cinema has been offering alternatives for movies since 1997. It has shown films
such as "Shakespeare in Love," "Punch Drunk Love," "Napoleon Dynamite," and "Little Miss Sunshine" when the regular cinema
would not. The Art Cinema has only one theater and runs many different types of films per month, only showing one per week.
The
theater holds about 30 people and has reclining seats.
The cinema admission prices are not any more expensive than
those at the Cinema 10 in Central Mall. Admission(before 6 p.m.) is $6 and regular admission (after 6pm) is $7. Those prices
are for the general public. There is another price that is for SAC members. If you are a SAC member, the prime time admission
fee is $5 and $6 for regular admission.
The same rules apply to any person under 17 going to see MA or R rated film...
The ticket must be Purchased by a parent or guardian. The Art Cinema will be showing seven shows through the month of October.
"The
Eleventh Hour," an environmental documentary made by Leonardo DiCaprio, and "Becoming Jane," a film about Jane Austen staring
Anne Hathaway, are two of the films showing in October.
There will also be a horror film showing October 26 through
Nov. 1 at 9:30 p.m. for Halloween only. For more information on upcoming films at the Salina Art Cinema, call (785) 452-9868
or visit the website at www.salinaartcenter.org.
